A horse pulling a Victoria carriage despite a swollen knee and ankle was rescued by members of People for Animals near Gateway of India at around 9 pm on Sunday and a cruelty complaint lodged against driver Mohammed Ismail at Colaba Police Station. "The hawk (knee) and fetlock (ankle) joint of its left hind leg were swollen. Doctors told me the horse may have had an infection that was not treated," said Rachel Koyama, head of field operations of the NGO. Colaba Police have registered a case under section 119 (punishment for cruelty to animals) of Bombay Police Act. The horse is being treated at the animal hospital in Parel.

"It is inherently cruel to ply horses on concrete and tar. This Victoria business does nothing but perpetrate cruelty on animals. We must put a stop to it," said Poonam Mahajan, People for Animals trustee.
