Hurting Jeev out of British Open

Jeev Milkha has pulled out of British Open due to a nagging rib injury two days before the year’s third Major gets underway at Turnberry,Scotland.

India’s No 1 golfer Jeev Milkha Singh has pulled out of the British Open due to a nagging rib injury two days before the year’s third Major gets underway at Turnberry,Scotland. The injury means the 38-year-old golfer will be out of action for at least three weeks.

“When I went out yesterday to play 18 holes,it was hurting. Even when I was taking deep breaths,it was hurting and when that happens you know it’s back,” said Jeev, who played in the US Open last month despite pain and missed the cut.

“It’s time for me take a break. I was hoping to be fit,but unfortunately, this has been the scenario throughout the year. But every time, there was a temptation to play and I kept postponing the rehabilitation and rest period.

“Playing in a Major has always been a priority but this time I had to take the decision of pulling out,” added the Indian, who was paired with South African Rory Sabbatini in the first round to be played on Thursday. He has been replaced in the draw by Australian John Senden.

Looking ahead

After regaining fitness,Jeev aims to begin preparations for the World Golf Championships and PGA Championship, the calendar’s last Major where he’d finished ninth in 2008. For the moment, though,he is focused on ensuring the injury doesn’t bother him again.

“I am planning to spend my time in Chandigarh for the next three weeks where I will also be consulting my personal physio. But I will not be compromising on my practice schedule at the range. I’m 70 per cent fit and I hope it’s 100 per cent once the WGC Championships begins,” said Jeev.

In Jeev’s absence,Ganganjeet Bhullar will be the only Indian in the draw at Turnberry. “Gagan and I practised together last evening and were looking forward to playing together. I hope he does well. He has one of the best long shots among Indian golfers and if he keeps his cool,I am sure he will make the cut. The rest depends on the conditions,” said Jeev.
