Following the footsteps of former premier Nawaz Sharif,cricketer-turned-politician Imran Khan has said that he believes terrorism in Pakistan cannot be controlled without engaging the Taliban in talks.
“Terrorism cannot be stopped by force. Therefore, the (Taliban) should be engaged in talks to overcome the menace,” Khan told the media yesterday after visiting the Data Darbar shrine that was targeted by suicide bombers last week.
He argued,”Washington is initiating peace talks with the Taliban and Islamabad should not hesitate to follow suit”.
Khan claimed there was a conspiracy to ignite sectarian clashes and other counties, including India, were taking advantage of opportunities to destabilise Pakistan.
“If given a chance to lead Pakistan as Prime Minister,I
can resolve the issue of terrorism within 90 days,” Khan said, whose Tehrik-e-Insaf party has no lawmakers in the current Parliament.
Khan said the national conference to be convened by Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani to discuss terrorism would serve no purpose as the federal and provincial governments are serving ‘American interests’.
“First of all,it is necessary to recognise the real terrorists and US slaves, and then action should be initiated against those who killed innocent people at the shrine,” he said.
Khan alleged that the Punjab government had failed to deliver and the terrorist attack on Data Darbar was proof of this.
“The menace of terrorism is bankrupting the economy. The royal families of Pakistan are enjoying facilities like bulletproof vehicles along with first-class security while the masses are left at the mercy of criminals and terrorists,” Khan said.
There have been calls from various quarters to initiate talks with the militants since Thursday’s attack on the shrine of Sufi saint Hazrat Ali Hajweri in Lahore that left 45 people dead.
Last week,PML-N chief Nawaz Sharif urged the government to hold talks with Taliban who are “willing to listen”.
However, leaders of the ruling Pakistan People¿s Party have ruled out talks with the Taliban.
