It’s been six months since Azaan Sami has been dividing time between his Karachi home where he stays with his mother Zeba Bakhtiar and Mumbai, where his father, musician Adnan Sami lives. But his reasons for visiting Mumbai aren’t purely personal. Like his dad, Azaan is a musician and has composed for Priyadarshan’s forthcoming film starring Darsheel Safary. “The film is a remake of the Iranian movie Children of Heaven and I’ve composed three songs. Since Darsheel is a young boy, the music goes with his image,” says Azaan, who has fused up tempo songs alongside some acoustic as well. He adds, “Maybe I’ll sing in it too.”
Trained in Western classical and Indian classical music, Azaan, who still trains four days a week at home, says his equation with his father is good. “I’m aware that I’m very young and it is because of my father that I have certain privileges, especially access to the right people. But my father is very straightforward, if he didn’t think I was ready I would not have taken this professional plunge,” says the 15-year-old. Although he loves working with Adnan Sami in the recording studio for all the ideas they exchange, he also admits his musical influences don’t include his father. “I didn’t meet my father for 10 years so my music is not influenced by him but I hope that someday I’m able to compose like him,” says Azaan, who composed his first song at the age of seven before he went on to direct an entire documentary film when he was 13. “It was during the direction of the documentary that I realised music was my calling,” says Azaan.
