To start with, Kings XI didn’t have the big names of Twenty20 playing this edition of the IPL. Is it good to be underestimated at times?
I am happy if others underestimate us as a team. We have got some good people playing in our side, and it’s about completing the tasks assigned to them. Our batsmen have scored runs in the first few games, and our bowlers have done well to defend some close games. It’s about having a set of people, playing good cricket and getting the right results.
Everyone says Yuvraj has god-gifted talent as a cricketer and he doesn’t need to take the grind at the nets before the match to score runs. Is it true?
Everybody has talent but one has to work on that and improve as a cricketer. Look at the amount of hard work Sachin Tendulkar puts in his game. For me, it works differently. I might like to go to a beach and just like to run or just listen to some music preparing for a cricket match. I like to feel relaxed mentally coming into a match.
But sometimes, when I am not happy about the way I am hitting the ball, I will go into the nets and bat for hours together. One has to understand that after my knee and shoulder injuries, I have to spend a lot of time working out and with the kind of travelling we do nowadays, it gets difficult to go into the nets everyday.
Even after a decade of your international debut, why do people say your potential is still unfulfilled?
It’s simply because I haven’t played a lot of Test cricket. I have played around 240-odd one-day internationals but there’s not much to show in the longer version. The ratio is almost obnoxious to show but I think by the end of my career if I can play around 70 Test matches, I am confident that I will fulfil the potential in me and answer my critics.
After your six-sixes-in-an-over feat, the pressure is always on you walking into a T20 game.
I try and bat according to the match situation. I haven’t ever thought about playing to the gallery. I know that when I walk in to bat people expect to see some big shots, some sixes but they also know that hitting six sixes in an over is no joke and it cannot be done over and over again. People have expectations from me and so do I. I try to get the best out of me each time I come to bat, sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t.
T20 is predominantly considered a batsman’s game but do you think bowlers too can win matches?
Yes, why not? If you look at the last few games, our bowlers have won us matches. Specifically in this tournament I think bowlers will play a bigger role. Wickets are not a great deal conducive to batting, they are a bit slow and the bowlers will have a good time defending totals.
