26/11 accused Mohammad Ajmal Amir Kasab got a new lawyer, S G Abbas Kazmi.
Appointed to defend Mohammed Amir Ajmal Qasab, the lone surviving gunman in the 26/11 Mumbai terror attack, Advocate S G Abbas Kazmi said he loves challenges and will do his best to abide by the court's decision. "I love challenges and will do my best to abide by the court's decision," Kazmi said.

"The Judge has decided to have me as the lawyer and I feel that it is honour of our nation that Qasab should have a lawyer to defend him," he said.

Asked what would be his strategy to defend Qasab, Abbas told reporters, "I have yet to go through the chargesheet and documents."

To a query whether he would seek security like earlier lawyer Anjali Waghmare had, Abbas said, "Surely, I will ask for police protection."

He said he had not defended any Pakistani national in his earlier cases. "I have no idea whether Qasab is a Pakistani. I have to go through the chargesheet," he said.

The 54-year-old lawyer, who obtained law degree from KC College in 1980 said he had defended a UK national in a child abuse case in Goa.

He has defended 25 to 30 accused in the 1993 Mumbai serial bomb blasts case. Abbas has also defended three accused in the Gulshan Kumar murder case who were ultimately acquitted by the court.

    Kasab gets new lawyer

Mumbai attacks accused Mohammad Ajmal Amir Kasab got a new lawyer, S G Abbas Kazmi, who has defended several accused in the 1993 bomb blasts case.

Special sessions judge M L Tahilyani appointed Kazmi, a lawyer of 20 years standing, to defend Kasab after the court was informed that there has been no response from Pakistan authorities to Kasab's request for a Pakistani lawyer.

"He is your lawyer," the judge told Kasab pointing at Kazmi, who said he was ready to defend him. Kasab then smiled at his new lawyer.

Kasab had requested for a Pakistani lawyer after the judge removed Anjali Waghmare as his counsel on a complaint of professional misconduct.

Special public prosecutor Ujwal Nikam informed the court that Kasab's request for a Pakistani lawyer has been forwarded yesterday to the joint secretary of the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) through a fax message.

However, there has been no response from the Pakistan side so far, he said.

The judge while appointing Kazmi, requested the government to fix reasonable fee to be paid to him for defending Kasab.

He ordered for a copy of the chargesheet to be given to Kazmi. The court also allowed advocate K P Pawar to assist Kazmi in defending Kasab.

I love challenges, says Kasab's new lawyerBy: Kaye | 17-Apr-2009 Reply | Forward At last Kasab shall be viewed in the docks. He finally has a lawyer excited in his new role, and bemused at his killer client's giggles in the court. Kasab is not naive and unmindful of his offence , but sniggers at our judicial system which guarantees him a decade of life if not his full tenure on earth. The police FIR of 11 hundred pages was most comprehensive ; they have thrown the book at him with all the IPCs-from waging war against the country,on and on-right down to booking him for entering the CST without a railway platform ticket. The prosecution can only put the final nail on the coffin, after all the charges have been wrangled in court. And that is going to be some doing by the prosecution !If Pakistan were to seek revenge on India for maligning them in the world , they should have handed over us all the others too --Dawood, Lakhvi ; the jing bang lot . Imagine the chaos ensuing amongst the judiciary, security, lawyers ,media panels and human rights activists; to nail them too in Kasab's coffin.
Not to blame a community By: Shahin Shinde | 17-Apr-2009 Reply | Forward I do not agree with Mr.Nitin Jain.He has blamed the whole Muslim community as in they only support a particular person if he/she is of his religion. Why don't we being educated, understand that if Ajmal doesn't get a lawyer he may be acquitted, which definitely no Indian will like.We all want him to be punished severely so that no body else ever dare to look upon India with bad intentions. Many Muslim people are participating in educating their community as to take them out of such wrong understandings. And its not only Muslim community, many others such as Marwadees, Jains etc make their own prohibited areas or societies and do not allow any other community to buy or rent flats in their areas. These kind of attitudes should be stopped on each community's level then only we will be able to make a strong and united INDIA, other wise what kind of lesson our coming generation is going to take from us by these kind of behaviors ?
Do not compare Shrikhand with Chicken By: N Other Jain | 17-Apr-2009 Reply | Forward I agree with you that if a defendant cannot afford an attorney, the government is required by law to provide the defendant an attorney. The reason Jains in particular "prohibit" others to buy or rent flats in their areas, is their abhorrence to meat eating. Almost all Jains that I know are very strict vegetarians. The analogy I can offer is that no Hindu or Muslim respectively would willingly rent a place where he knows cow slaughter or pig slaughter is going to take place. I therefore take strong exception to you comparing Marwadess and Jains with terrorists. I can say with some confidence that most Jains would have no qualms about renting a place to the followers of Swaminarayan sect or Vaishnavites or Bishnois of Rajasthan.
kasab days are not numbered and kasab is confidentBy: sarma | 17-Apr-2009 Reply | Forward appointing a layer is ok. but i still dont understand when kasab is caught red hand and we have many witnesses, what a layer can do ? unless he tries to disprove that the man caught is not kasab !!!.so these layers are equally responsible for the current crime in india.kasab instead of repenting,( he says he wants to go to heven, what an pigly ideology) he looks confident of getting free by a pakistani layer and todays ruling govt.election has come as a blessing in disguise for kasab.
REASONS WHY LAWYER TO ACCUSED IS REQUIREDBy: B S GANESH, BANGALORE | 17-Apr-2009 Reply | Forward Mr. Sarma. I am not a lawyer but a senior citizen engineer who is actually spending time in reading news and web and sending my comments. Though everybody knows that Kasab is caught redhanded and is the actual accused, legal profession requires that Kasab must prove that he is an accused through a lawyer in the presence of a judge. This is similar to a proverb " unless a priest gives water in a special vessel, it can not be considered as a " THIRTHA " (holi God blessed water". Unless both prosecution and defence lawyers argue before a judge and judge gives his verdict after hearing both sides, accused is not considered to have been given fair chance to express his views. In the absence he is considered as inocent and may be set free. He being a Pakistani there is more rouble to India saying innocent Pakistani is being harassed. Hence legal assistance to prove that he is accused is necessary.B S GANESH, BANGALORE
Response to nitinjainBy: Shantip | 17-Apr-2009 Reply | Forward Mr. Jain with all due respect, i believe that u represent the entire mindset of india today. why not give such people a chance? what is it from this report that shows u that muslims are narrowminded and step forward only for their own people?? wasnt the previous lawyer a hindu ?? and wasnt she ready to defend Kasab? the job of defending this terrorist has been thrust upon any lawyer who is a law abiding citizen of India. and it is an appointment by the supreme court judge; do u actually believe that anyone in their right frame of mind wil want to defend a terrorist?? think again before u hurl communal accusations. many of us jus talk with thinking or without any knowledge of what we are talking. meet a few muslims who are patriots and totally condemn the terrorist attacks, and then tell me.
