I want to retain my individuality: Abhay Deol

“When I look back to the kind of work I have done, I find some similarities with uncle’s earlier films like ‘Bandini’, ‘Satyakam’ and ‘Chupke-Chupke’, he adds.

Oye Lucky… that is slated for release on November 28 is directed by Dibakar Banerjee, who won accolades for his debut film, ‘Khosla Ka Ghosla’.

The film is loosely based on the true life of Devender ‘Bunty’ Singh, who was responsible for over 500 burglaries in Delhi.

Talking about the film, Abhay says, “People will relate to ‘Oye Lucky Lucky Oye’ and to my character in the film, who comes from a lower middle class background and chases money and fame through dubious means.

“In the film, the protagonist Lucky wants to become rich and famous by crooked means,” he says.

When questioned whether he had done any special preparations to portray the role, Abhay says, “I participated in a workshop which I normally do before the start of my films. It helps you to prepare the background of a character.”

Apart from Deol, Neetu Chandra, Archana Puran Singh and Paresh Rawal, are also playing important roles in the movie. About the director of the film, the youngest Deol says, “Dibakar has an endearing quality to base his characters on reality which makes you relate to them.”

The 32-year-old actor started his career in 2005 with ‘Socha Na Tha’, which was produced by his uncle Dharmendra. His other films are, ‘Honeymoon Travels Pvt. Ltd.,’ ‘Ek Chalis ki Last Local’ and ‘Manorama Six Feet Under.’

In the film, Paresh Rawal is playing three different roles Lucky’s father, Gogi Bhai, and a doctor. Each character comes in Lucky’s life and gives it a new direction, Abhay says.

The actor, despite spending four years in the film industry, has not been seen in lime light very often. “I want to have a personal life and sometimes you pay a lot to be in the limelight, which I do not want to do. As an actor I am here to sell my film not myself.

The actor’s next ‘Dev D’ is entirely different from the roles he has been doing. Directed by ‘Black Friday’ fame Anurag Kashyap, it is dark metaphor on the young generation.

The film is an adaptation of Sharat Chandra’s famous novel ‘Devdas’.
