Saif Ali Khan on films, kids, James Bond and Islam
Is the success of Love Aaj Kal sweeter because it’s your first production venture?
Certainly, I’ve done a helluva lot for this film than any other release. I’ve enjoyed the creative aspects of production right from the germ of the idea to its scale, location, look, promo and even the font and the colour of the poster. I knew that people would be interested in giving us a chance but there was a fear at the back of my mind about the kind of reception the film would get. It’s the same fear that every host goes through. He can organise the most amazing party but he wonders: what if nobody shows up? There is prestige at stake. So, definitely, I’m very happy with the credible opening of the film.
What is the philosophy of your banner, Illuminati films?
It came to be because of our hunger for more. As an actor if you invest more in a film than what your role requires, it’s termed interference. But when you make your own movie, you can creatively guide it. Like in all my relationships, nobody is a boss here; we are in it with equal respect. Dino (co-producer Dinesh Vijan) is also the guy behind Being Cyrus so we are in the same creative zone. I always feel that if Dino and I was one person, we’d make a great guy. At Illuminati Films, we want to create a new world with every film that we make. The focus is on two things: to budget the film right and to choose the right director.
