IAEA fails to elect new leader

The IAEA has failed in its initial attempt to elect a new head for the UN nuclear monitor, paving the way for new candidates.

The International Atomic Energy agency has failed in its initial attempt to elect a new head for the UN nuclear monitor, paving the way for new candidates, diplomats said.

Yukiya Amano of Japan and South Africa’s Abdul Samad Minty were in the running to replace IAEA chief Mohamed ElBaradei when he steps down in November.

But neither was endorsed by the two-thirds majority needed in secret balloting by board members Friday, said diplomats inside the meeting. They spoke on condition of anonymity because the meeting was closed.

The meeting will be adjourned for several weeks to allow new hopefuls to declare their candidacy before reconvening for a new round of voting.
