Defending an Indian Air Force policy that forbids Muslim personnel recruited after 2002 from keeping a beard, the Union Government has told the Supreme Court that its policies are “secular in nature” and that only those Air Force personnel are permitted to grow hair or keep a beard, “whose religion specifically prohibits” cutting hair. In Islam, it added, keeping a beard is not compulsory. “It is submitted that all Muslims do not keep a beard. The practice of growing and keeping beard is optional and sporting a beard is not universally recognised in the religion of Islam.”

The government’s response was to an appeal by Aircraftsman Ansari Aftab Ahmad, who challenged the validity of the IAF’s instructions, dated February 24 and April 1, 2003, prohibiting Muslim personnel from growing a beard. The court in September 2008 sought a scrutiny of the rule.

“The main aim of the policy, which lays down dress and department rules for the Air Force personnel, is that personnel should be known by the duty which he performs and not by the religion to which he belongs,” the government told the apex court. The policy, the Air Force stressed, was “issued in the interest of cohesiveness in a combatant force like the IAF and also keeping in view the security implications.”

“All Air Force personnel, while on duty, are required to wear similar uniform and do not display any sign or object which marks him distinct from others. In an armed force, it is always intended that to the extent possible, all personnel should look identifiably similar so that they may work in a cohesive, co-operative and co-ordinate manner,” it said.

Muslims with BeardBy: 2tfrut | 22-Jan-2009 Reply | Forward This must be the handi-work of some of the pro sangh - Lt/ Col Prohit type of characters who were uncomfortable with muslims with beard in IAF. Otherwise before 2003 Muslims were allowed to sport bear temporarily and also permanently. As a Short service commission officer I had kept the beard through out the service. What I alwats found surprising was the discomfiture and lack of knowledge of senior staff including Air Marshals who not aware of the policy and I was always pointed out for having the beard; of course not negatively but as a surprise by the officers for their lack of knowledge. As for the Sikhs, some of them trim the beard and some with free flowing have to tie it with a cloth. If the Govt. is against a free flowing beard of Muslims then they can fix the limite as maajority of muslims do not have free flowing beard but only of fist lenght.
No Compromise with the RulesBy: Jagdip Sura | 19-Jan-2009 Reply | Forward Sikhs are not allowed to keep Beard free flown while on duty in Defence forces, where as religion says not to tie the beard.Still siks are following and obeing the order of Defence Rule.So Why the Muslims should be allowed to keep the Beard. If they want they can go to Pakistan Defence forces and do the things as they wish.(Muslims are not to be allowed to keep the Beard while on duty)
To all Muslims BashersBy: Favaz | 18-Jan-2009 Reply | Forward Why is it that when any Anti-Muslim topic comes up all the Muslim haters are so united. If you talk of religious identity in IAF then I believe Sikhs should not be allowed to grow Beard and hair, Christians shouldn't be allowed to wear cross and Hindus to put any saffron on their head. J.M. Manchanda is saying why terrorists are clean shaven. For your information we Muslims do not believe in terrorism. Its against our belief. Terrorists on l believe in religion called terrorism. They can come in any disguise just to hide their identity. One thing people can easily become prey of terrorists recruiters by these sort of biased approach.
Please don't demean IslamBy: Jayadevan | 18-Jan-2009 Reply | Forward Religion is defined by three people, the tailor, the barber and the halwaai. There is nothing of our relationship with God or the rest of His/Her creation in it. The Sikhs are trapped within the five ks. I could whole-heartedly support the Jehovah's Witness schoolchildren when they refused to sing the national anthem. They were driven by an ideal greater than the walls that nationalism creates. I could even sympathize with the Muslims who found singing the Vande Mataram difficult, because it did, at one time, mean obeisance to Mother India, and a true Muslim is enjoined NOT to bow down to any one except Allah, due to the risks of idolatry. (Rehman is a devout Muslim, but that is beyond the issue.) I am sure that some scholar will be able to dig out an obscure bit of scripture that calls for a true Muslim to have a beard. But it is indeed a mockery of a great religion that enjoined people to do many good things to confine it to the trinity mentioned above.
