In a move to beef up air defence capabilities, the Indian Air Force (IAF) is going to station all its MiG 29 squadrons at Adampur Air Force Base in Punjab. The IAF also plans to induct upgraded MiG 29 aircraft sometime next year. The first lot of six upgraded MiG 29s is expected to reach Adampur by mid-2010, said an Air Force officer.

“We consider ourselves to be a strategic air power establishment of the IAF in the western sector, ever ready for operations. We are fully geared up to operate in any given time frame like any other Air Force station of the country,” said Air Commodore H S Arora, Air Officer Commanding of the Adampur air base.

The Adampur base, the second largest IAF base in the country, already has two frontline fighter squadrons and will see another squadron moving from Jamnagar in Gujarat soon.

The IAF is also working on extending the service life of MiG 29s from 25 to 40 years, for which the Russian Aircraft Corporation MiG has signed a contract with the MoD to upgrade over 60 fighters in service with the IAF since 1980. The upgradation is taking place under the $950-million contract signed in March 2008.

Whle the first lot would be inducted by mid-2010, all the 60 fighters are scheduled to be in by 2013. “We are looking forward to inducting upgraded MiG 29s which will happen sometime next year. The Ministry of Defence and IAF headquarters are monitoring the upgradation,” said Arora.

You guys are morons!By: HC | 06-Oct-2009 Reply | Forward India spends 4% of it's budget on defense which is what every country in the world does. They do it to maintain deterrence against China. India is so far ahead of Pakistan now, that China is the real threat to India.
India should upgrade food suppliesBy: Raj Thackrey | 05-Oct-2009 Reply | Forward Instead of upgrading weapons of destruction, india should upgrate its supplies of food for its poor people.

MIG 29By: D.A.ESWAR | 05-Oct-2009 Reply | Forward Upgradation of MIG29 ned to be secret and Govt and Airforce should not tell publicly and Media should be kept at a distance. By this publicity you are telling Pakistan and China to attack India as our Airforce is not having latest Fighet Aircraft. Please curb the over enthusiasm to report every defence activity to Public
Spending more good money on bad investmentsBy: J.R.Murthy | 05-Oct-2009 Reply | Forward It is no wonder that a reputed International agency had listed India as one of the top ten most corrupt beauracracies in the world. If one is in the Purchasing Dept. of any Central Depts. in India,no matter how lowly his position is, he is assured of a comfortable living in 'under the table' payments from bidding vendors, for revealing confidential quotes from opposing vendors. In Defence related orders, the stakes are several fold higher as the multi billion rupees products and services extend beyond India's borders and go International.Wining, dining and whatever else(?) by rogue vendors of another country, say in this case Russian, to the friendly top brass of the Indian Military Purchasing Dept.can tilt the awarding of tha contract to them. This is not a guess but a statement of reality. The MIG-29s have had a documented poor performance record in the past. Wouldn't be wise to find out why they were purchased in the first place and who were responsible for their poor quality?
We don't need thses aircrafts...By: Raji | 05-Oct-2009 Reply | Forward Indians are living in there own little world. They know what there government and (sole less) media tells them. Lets make it clear that no external force can break India part but its own people. The justice system is so poor and corrupt in this country that eventually people will prefer to get rid of such a corrupt, Hippocratic, and hollow system and will think of breaking away from the Union of India as we Punjabi's are thinking. We, Punjabi's, are fed up with the anti Punjab, and anti people policies of Indian government that we are realizing that we have no future in Fanatic India, so called democracy, no one is getting justice. Sole less peoples are ruling and have no connection to comman man and are busy in filing their pockets. But this thing has to stop. We need freedom from Indian occupation. Our brothers and sisters are suffering, they have no way to go. Lets get up and fight the Indian occupation and make our home land free of Indian rule. There is no justice for us in India.
