Two days after he said women could be recruited as fighter pilots only if they did not become mothers till a certain age, Vice Chief of Air Staff Air Marshal P K Barbora today took a swipe at the political class, saying politics over defence purchases impinged “very badly” on the country’s military requirements.

“As far as defence goes, we don’t even match up with Pakistan,” Barbora, while referring to Defence exports, told an aerospace seminar organised here by the CII.

“The internal politics over the years is such that whatever defence requirements are cleared by the government, they are opposed by the opposition parties and the same happens when roles change and the opposition sits in government. That impinges very badly on our defence requirements.”

He asked the private defence industry to take note of the China example on reverse engineering of defence technologies. “Forget about ethics. China has done reverse engineering. Has anyone ever had the courage to ask China why are you doing it? No one cares a hoot. If you can’t do it yourself, you should know how to do reverse engineering.”

He took on the defence PSU sector, especially in the aviation industry, saying India does not even contribute to one percent of the global industry. He said Indian PSUs have remained happy manufacturing doors of Airbus aircraft while China has gone ahead and started mass producing commercial jets.

Well said Vice ChiefBy: Ajit dewan | 28-Nov-2009 Reply | Forward Rightly said,no harm in reverse engineering,do we not make Kalashnikov guns, erstwhile USSR lifted the entire schminser44 factory and made what they and the world calls Kalashnikov guns, the problem lies in the metallurgy which can withstand heat and shocks,we had the best iron when the metal industry of rest of the world was in infancy.Patents and intellectual rights have no role when the security of a country is at stake.Luftwaffe jets in their infancy taught the British and Americans to make jet engines
A bold Gentleman and an officerBy: kbk nair | 21-Nov-2009 Reply | Forward Air Marshall PK Barbora has indeed come out with the truth. Soviet Union, during WWII era has done some reverse Engg of US and other western countries. China is doing now among other nations. Why cant India try and do instead of wasting crores of rupees in R&D. India has the capability to produce good equpt by reverse Engg. Air marshal Barbora is correct and let us prove ourselves instead of worrying about US Sanctions and signing end user agreement with the US. Come on Indians let us stand on our own feet. Ignore the communists party of India as they are the paid goons of China their main aim is to see that India does not overtake China.
Well Said...By: Vijay Kumar | 20-Nov-2009 Reply | Forward i like this guy.. he is saying pretty much the facts, as it is..It may not be politically correct, but it's closer to the truth than what others have to say. Let's hope that our defence forces have a dozen more senior officers like him, who are not afraid of telling the truth, rather than be servile to bureaucrats and politicians.
iaf vice chiefs latestBy: mohan | 20-Nov-2009 Reply | Forward i agree completely with air vice chief. it takes years to get things done , be it a fighter planes or howziters( after BOFORS fiasco. one has to agree the Bofors are wonderful guns which proved their mettle.just because of stink in purchasing them now days everything is delayed. by the time the fighterjets are evaluated one by one at different locations and THEN ordering 126 planes and THEN by the time they are delivered they may become somewhat obsolute. the procurements should be sppeded up for eg all the fighter jets couldbe tested at different altitude and weather simultaneously(all five finalists going to different location like round robin contest. it is really alarming if he says pakistan is better than us in both prcurement and if i understand it correctly i exportof defence material. india will probably NEVER catch up with chinahowever we may wish. but we should be able to field more than enogh defence if china and pakistan work in unison in any border incursion or mini war
Shabash!By: Kochu Thampy | 20-Nov-2009 Reply | Forward At long last, we have someone in a responsible position cutting through the hypocrisy and calling a spade a spade. Augurs well for Indian defence, not necessarily for the individual, because our system dislikes frankness and consistently punishes good sense.
