IBF to bid for Olympic qualifying meet

Buoyed by the success of fifth Commonwealth Boxing Championships which concluded here last week,Indian Boxing Federation on Wednesday said it would ask the continental body to allot India the Asian Pre-Olympic Qualifying tournament next year.

Buoyed by the success of fifth Commonwealth Boxing Championships which concluded here last week,Indian Boxing Federation on Wednesday said it would ask the continental body to allot India the Asian Pre-Olympic Qualifying tournament next year.

“The outstanding performances of the Indian boxers in winning six gold medals as well as accolades that are pouring in from all the participating countries and their officials,the IBF has decided to submit its bid to the Asian Boxing Confederation for the Asian Pre-Olympic Qualifying tournament to be held in 2011,” IBF said in a release on Wednesday.

The IBF also said it plans to host one major international boxing tournament every year from next year.

“We plan to study the feasibility of organising one major International Boxing Tournament every year starting from 2011 which will have AIBA 3 star/2 star rating,so that top boxing nations of the world can be invited to participate,” IBF Secretary General P K Muralidharan Raja said in the release.

The IBF thanked the various stakeholders involved in the successful holding of the Commonwealth Championships,including Sports Ministry,Sports Authority of India,Commonwealth Games Organising and sponsors.

It also thanked the NDMC for providing a world class Talkatora Stadium and Delhi Police for security arrangements during the March 10-18 championships.
