Railways off-spinner Kulamani Parida, who was stopped from bowling on Thursday due to a suspect bowling action, has said he would rather stop playing than go through corrective measures after 13 years of first-class cricket. As the Indian cricket board’s push against illegal bowling actions continued at the start of the 2009-10 Ranji Trophy season, Parida was the second off-spinner in two days — after Baroda’s Rajesh Pawar on Wednesday — to come under the scanner.
“I have been playing for over 15 years, including junior cricket, and now they tell me my action is suspect. I am not an under-22 player who is ready to go through anything because he wants to play for India one day. I am 32 years old now. If they tell me my action is not okay, I may just quit playing,” Parida said.
On Thursday morning, match-referee S Rajesh and on-field umpires Anil Chaudhary and Suresh Shastri advised the Railways team not to bowl Parida, or he would be called for chucking. They reached this verdict after analysing match footage of his bowling after stumps on the second day. Interestingly, Parida was not called during his six overs that he bowled on Wednesday.
A video recording of his bowling has been sent to S Venkatraghavan, the director of the BCCI’s umpiring committee, who will analyse the action and decide if Parida needs corrective action.
No further details given
The umpires and the match referee refused to give any further details. Parida said he was surprised by the decision. “I don’t know how they’ve come to this conclusion. We were told that we can’t see the footage. I am clueless as to why this was done,” he said.
