Cong says Punjab Police 'demoralised' by Akali goons

Following the alleged attack on Assistant Inspector general (AIG) S S Mand on late Monday night, Congress workers took out a silent march to protest against the alleged lawlessness in the state, on Wednesday. The wrokers sealed their mouth with black cloth and started a march from the party office in Clock Tower towards the Jagaraon Bridge in front of the statues of Bhagat Singh, Rajguru and Sukhdev.

The march was led by the District Congress Committee Ludhiana (Urban) president Pawan Dewan.

Later talking to reporters Dewan said: "The police have been totally demoralised in Punjab as the Akalis had been humiliating them every day. He maintained that the situation had reached to such an extent that the Punjab Police were feeling insecure and they might need to be provided security from the Akali goons. He pointed out, the Monday night's incident in Ludhiana was quite shameful. He asked, if a senior police officer can be thrashed and beaten up in full public view what will be the plight of a common man. Dewan said, the purpose of holding a silent protest march was to convey the message as how much people were frightened and scared over what was happening in Punjab. "If the policemen are not safe how can the common man be?" he asked.

A meeting by Rajiv Gandhi youth federation (RGYF) was also held in which the members codmened the alleged attack on the AIG SS Mand by former youth Akali Dal leaders. The members questioned on the law and order situation of the state.

The Maha Sabha, a non-governmental organisation (NGO) also took out a protest march at Feroze Gandhi Market near the statue of Martyr Kartar Singh Sarabha on Wednesday.
