‘If they keep performing like this, nobody will come to watch them play in Mohali’

Most of the fans of Kings XI Punjab have been waiting for a win at home. But Saturday was not the day,as the home team lost to Kolkata Knightriders in their sixth match of the Indian Premier League (IPL).

This was Kings XI Punjab’s fifth loss in the tournament. With eight matches left, the team’s chances of making it to the semi-finals appear bleak.

“We came to see Kings XI Punjab win but they have disappointed again. Fans come here to cheer the local lads but they have not been performing,” Munish Kaushal,a bank employee, said. “They have been performing well but only in patches. The team will now face Mumbai Indians. The sooner they get their act together, the better it will be.”

For many, the team’s fielding on Saturday, especially some fine catches by Manwinder Bisla and Brett Lee,set things up for them. But with Kolkata Knightriders gathering 21 runs in the last over, the target of 184 seemed daunting.

“Bisla’s catch was extraordinary. Even Lee took some fine catches but only if they could have restricted them inside 150 runs. Those 21 extra runs made the difference in the end,” Parminder Singh, cricket fan, said.

The Punjab side will take on Mumbai Indians on March 30.

“If the team keep performing like this, nobody will come to watch them play in Mohali,” a youngster at the stadium said.

In the stadium, the crowd was seen screaming Binga Binga (Brett Lee’s nickname) whenever the Aussie took a catch or came to bowl.

Most of the fans were in for a surprise when Yuvraj Singh came out to open the innings with Ravi Bopara. As he smashed a six and four off Ajit Agarkar, the crowd erupted in joy but it was short-lived as Yuvraj got out in the same over.

The roads closed during the previous matches, meanwhile, were open on Saturday. But once the teams arrived at the stadium, they were again cordoned off.
