The premier institute launches carbon finance course to fulfill the needs of the growing market
The Indian Institute of Management-Ahmedabad (IIM-A) has launched a course on carbon finance to train budding managers in the various aspects of Global Warming and carbon emission.
Prof P R Shukla, one of the designers of the course, said that the aim of the course is to sensitise and prepare future managers about the emerging market as well as its implications both in scientific and business terms.
“The carbon industry is amongst the fastest growing markets across the globe. By 2012, the volume of the carbon market is projected to be only second to that of global oil and gas market,” said Prof Shukla.
Jointly designed by Prof Shukla and one of his IIM-A colleagues, the course has attracted 126 5th term PGP students, including 13 students from the European Union.
While IIM-A is the first institution to introduce such a course in India, there are a very few institutes which offer something similar at the international level, said Prof Shukla. Global carbon expert Ram Babu, who is also the Managing Director of Cantor CO2e, a London-based company, said: “While there exists a huge and expanding market for carbon, there is also a shortage of expertise in the sector. By 2012, the volume of carbon trade across the globe is expected to touch 100 billion dollars and India will play a major role in this scenario.”
“Over the last year, India earned about 200 million dollars in the trade. The volume can only increase in the coming years,” he said, adding that by 2012, India can expect to earn about 15 billion dollars from the sector.
