The Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad (IIM-A) will conduct the first annual review of Indian Placement Reporting Standards (IPRS) on September 29.
The meeting, which will be attended by recruiters and representatives of various B-schools, is meant to review the "standards" that were introduced by the institute in June 2011 to instill greater transparency and uniformity in the way B-schools report salary and non-salary information related to placements.
As many as 26 B-schools across the country — mostly private management institutes — have formally decided to abide by IPRS. Among IIMs, only the Shillong institute has accepted the placement standards that are also meant to enable a fair comparison between B-schools on multiple parameters, including salary packages bagged by students.
Private B-schools that have accepted IPRS include SP Jain Institute of Management and Research; Institute of Management Technology, Ghaziabad; Tata Institute of Social Studies; Xavier Institute of Management and GD Goenka World Institute.
"We need people to push on transparency. That part is non-negotiable," Saral Mukherjee, a senior member of the IIM-A placement committee and the brain behind the introduction of IPRS, told The Indian Express.
"Private B-schools, which have accepted IPRS, have taken unilateral decisions to bring transparency in the manner they declare their campus placement results. Now, it is up to the respective IIMs to decide," he said.
When asked why the standards were not getting the desired response, Mukherjee said, "There are many B-schools which are keen to reveal their highest pay packages, but they like to be silent when it comes to the lowest or average salaries. There are B-schools which reveal their salary figures for a year, but choose not to disclose the numbers in a lean year."
In spite of poor response from most of the IIMs, the institute plans to send out invites to all of them for the review meeting. "The aim of the IPRS review meeting is to give a chance to correct and modify the standards."
