IISER starts classes from new campus at Mohali

The Indian Institute of Science Education and Research has begun classes from its new permanent campus on 125 acres of land at Knowledge City in Sector 81.

Finally,the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER) has begun classes from its new permanent campus on 125 acres of land at Knowledge City in Sector 81 here. Almost four years after it started working from the transit campus in Mahatma Gandhi State Institute of Public Administration (MGSIPA),Sector 26,Chandigarh,IISER also got its first inhabitants with its Director,senior faculty members and a group of students moving in.

With a portion of the new campus building still in an advanced stage of completion and final finishing touches in progress,the research laboratories of IISER will,however,shift from the transit campus before the onset of the new academic session in June,IISER Coordinator Dr Singh told Newsline. To become the first residents of the new campus,Director Prof N Sathyamurthy,eight senior faculty members and a group of 200 students recently shifted to the new campus site after their residences and the first hostel block were made fully operational.

Dr Singh said that the second hostel will be ready by the third week of January and the remaining 200 students would shift by January 26 when it will be inaugurated. IISER is one of the six national premier institutes of higher education coming up in Knowledge City,spread over 381 acres of land,the foundation stone of which was laid by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh here on September 27,2006.

One of five new inter-disciplinary research institutes was established by the Union Ministry of Human Resource Development in 2007 to carry out cutting-edge research in frontier areas of science and provide quality science education at the undergraduate and postgraduate level. IISER’s primary mandate is to perform cutting-edge research in all areas of the basic sciences.

With work on the first academic block and lecture hall complex complete,the fifth academic session will begin from its new campus,informed the IISER coordinator. IISER’s new campus has already received the Central Analytical Facility (CAF) building.
