The Union Cabinet on Thursday approved the revision of pay scales of faculty, design, scientific and other academic staff of the centrally funded institutions including IITs and IIMs with retrospective effect from January 1,2006.

With the Cabinet approval, the revised pay scales as recommended by the Prof Goverdhan Mehta Committee will come into effect putting the Directors of IITs and IIMs at the Rs 80,000 basic salary slab, just under the Secretary level. The bigger pay packets are expected to draw better faculty and also arrest the rate of attrition, especially in IITs and IIMs.

The Cabinet approval for the revised pay scales had been pending for a while now, prompting the IIT faculty to threaten a stir. The pay revision has also put to rest all speculation of IIT and IIM directors being put in different pay scales. Sources said both will be entitled to the same scale as was the case before the Sixth Pay Commission came into effect. There was speculation that IIM directors would be placed on a pay scale lower than their counterparts in the IITs. “The Cabinet also approved financial assistance to states for implementing the revised scales. This will enable the institutes to recruit and retain talented and well qualified faculty and to provide them environment and working conditions that encourage them to enhance their performance and capacity,” a statement issued by the HRD Ministry said.
