Over 200 professors of IIT-Bombay on Monday went on mass leave demanding pay parity with government scientists.

“IIT professors are loosing Rs 23 lakh in their career compared with the government scientists and other officials of similar rank,” Somya Mukherjee, Secretary of Faculty Forum IIT-B, said.

The salary hike demand is also to attract faculties to join IITs, he said, adding the Government has announced setting up of eight new IITs across the country and 8,000 professors are needed for that.

“Our job in IIT is teaching and research unlike other universities, where research is secondary. So, we are demanding honour and prestige for our work,” Mukherjee said.

He also condemned the Gowardhan Mehta report submitted to the Government in February this year, saying some of its recommendations are not favouarable to professors.

“The report has suggested that IIT professor should have work experience of three years after PhD. However, it is very unlikely that after getting job, people may come here,” he said.

Indian Govt got its priority wrongBy: Jatin | 25-Aug-2009 Reply | Forward It will be wrong to blame IIT professors if they want salary parity with other Govt scientists in national institutes and universities. Whatever Jay or Goel said is equally true for almost any scientist in a Govt or national institute. Our huge R n’ D budget is not proportional to its output. There is no accountability in Indian higher education and research sector. In reality, Indian Govt got its priority wrong. Hundreds of children are dying every year in encephalitis in UP and Bihar (see BBC report). IITs and our national institutes have not developed any vaccine while Chinese can do it by themselves. We spend billions on useless moon mission while we do not have money to implement revolutionary “right to education” bill. The same is true for many diseases, agricultural technology, crop varieties, technology for our national security etc. It will be proper to describe ISRO or DRDO achievements as “assembled in India” at best rather than “made in India”.
Are IITs assets for India?By: Abhijit | 25-Aug-2009 Reply | Forward Meritorious teachers can never remain brilliant without active and original research program. Only teaching is a very boring job for someone who has original thinking ability. IIT faculties are yet to show much ability in original research. The glory for IITs are mainly because ability to export BTech students abroad. In a third world country like India it itself became a huge “achievement” for parents and students. In reality IITs do a great job simply because there was and still is a huge shortage of scientific and technical manpower in all the developed countries. Industrialists like Bill Gates, politicians like Obama routinely praises IITs for the same reason I praises hard working Bihari migrant workers to do great work in my agricultural land in India. Almost all the famous Indian scientists (original thinker in basic research where original talent is needed) are from rural and semi-urban background, non-IITians. IITs supply cheap manpower to the West at free of cost.
I.I.T B.professors demand pay hikeBy: D.A.Srinivasan | 25-Aug-2009 Reply | Forward Sir,The agitation by the professors of I.I.T and I.I.M needs to be looked into cautiosly. To day these institutions are recognised world over as one of the best institutions in the world. The students who pass out from these institutions are absorbed by the corporate sector in India and abroad at a very attractive pay packet. There are nomber of other institutions imparting the same kind of knowledge but the students do not such good job market. The institutions mentioned above are complaining that they are not getting the right talent for teaching and many posts are vacant. If the teachers merit is not recognised the institutions have to be satisfied with mediocre teachers along with this goes the rating of the institution.Meritorious teachers will come to the institutes only if they are recognised and paid as per their market value. If we allow the politicians and the burocrats to decide the working conditions we will get teachers of the caliber of corporation schools and loss of name
RE: SalariesBy: Academic Insider | 25-Aug-2009 Reply | Forward na baap bada na bhaiyya, sabse bada rupaiyaa. when everyone wants to earn only money, why blame the professors, after all their students earn in crores and they are earning only in lakhs. In IIM's and other management institutes, professors earn handsomely. Fresh IIT graduates joining a new job command a higher salary than their professors who have taught for 30 to 40 years. Only recently has the pay increased. Ask any IIT professor who retired 10-15 years back how much he used to get and how much his students got. Professors who have studied in premier institutes themselves and done doctorates from abroad should command atleast 25 lakhs per year, only then can one expect to retain talent in premier institutes because these same professors would surely get that much salary in the private sector or even abroad. Private run Education is also a big business especially run these days by politicians and industrialists, so why should not the professors get their share of the benefit/moolah.
Let them go! :)By: JayJ | 24-Aug-2009 Reply | Forward I agree with brother Jay (Monday , 24 Aug '09 21:04:54 PM) . As a former IIT(B) alumni, almost everything he said is correct.I might add that even the teaching is not much to speak about. It is the quality students they attract (as a result of the entrance exams) and the pressure cooker of a schedule that does that "teaching".Most of these professors ought think of their cushy life (Powai surroundings, away from the rest of the pollution), free housing until they retire, in campus medical care and a great (free) school for their children. If they go on mass leave, the students would not suffer, trust me. Most of the students are very capable of teaching themselves better than these professors. :)
