Illegal migration racket: Delhi cops question cricketer’s family

The Delhi Police has announced a Rs 25,000 cash reward for information leading to his arrest.

A two-member Delhi Police team arrived in the city to question some Railway officials and the family of former Indian cricketer Jacob Martin — an accused in an illegal migration racket. The Delhi Police has announced a Rs 25,000 cash reward for information leading to his arrest.

It was after the Supreme Court rejected Martin’s anticipatory bail application last week,that Delhi Police declared him wanted.

Sub-Inspector R L Meena said the Delhi Police team visited Martin’s house near ISKON Temple in Gotri.

“We spoke to his family members,but they said they did not know about his whereabouts. We will speak to Western Railways officials in the same connection,” added Meena.

Martin has represented Railways in the Ranji Trophy,and was suspended following allegations of involvement in an illegal migration racket in December 2004.

One person named Nimesh Kumar was found travelling on a fake passport and during questioning,he told the police three persons – Rajender Bhiku Bhai Patel,Jacob Martin and Janak Lal Bhogi Raj Pancholi had arranged his journey for Rs 7 lakh.

Martin,who played 10 ODIs for India,took a cricket squad of 17 players to Britain in 2003 under the name of Ajwa Sports Club. But,according to his earlier statement,16 of the 17 players had returned to India.

It was after the arrest of Patel and statements of Kumar’s family that the Delhi Police established Martin’s role in the racket.

Patel who was arrested this January 3 reportedly told Delhi Police that he received only Rs 25,000 for his role in arranging the fake passport,while Martin and Pancholi divided the sum.
