Glamorous French First Lady Carla Bruni, who is at the centre of media speculation the she is expecting her first child with President Nicolas Sarkozy, has boasted that she is more in demand than the British Queen.

The 43-year-old former supermodel made the declaration while discussing her role in Woody Allen’s latest film ‘Midnight in Paris’,which opened the Cannes Film Festival last night, the Daily Telegraph reported.

Bruni, who got the role following Allen’s breakfast with Sarkozy at the Elysée Palace, plays a museum tour guide in the Parisian-set comedy and is on screen for three minutes.

Referring to the director,Bruni said: “When he was asked in a press conference if he would dream of casting the Queen of England,he said he’d rather cast me,which made me extremely happy and a lot of my artist friends — actors and actresses,of which I have many — jealous.” She said she was the only first lady to be approached by Allen because she is an “artiste”.

“He didn’t ask Michelle Obama because she’s a lawyer. He perhaps made a link between my work as a singer and the work of an actor. Perhaps he wouldn’t have asked me if I was a lawyer or businesswoman or doctor,” Bruni said.

The Italian-born model and singer was speaking to a French radio station after pulling out of the red carpet premiere at the last minute, citing “personal and professional reasons”.

The explanation served only to add to rumours that she is pregnant.
