In the wake of experts worldwide suggesting there is a high probability of a new mutant strain of flu this winter that could be more virulent and lethal resulting in high mortality around the world, including India, the city unit of the Indian Medical Association (IMA) is gearing up to tackle the situation.

The IMA city unit held a meeting on Monday at Ruby Hall Clinic where Dr Peter Patel, international director of the project ‘Saving Lives’ conducted a seminar on ‘Pandemic flu Mitigation planning and challenges for the region.’

“There is uncertainty about the virus and its impacts are a key challenge for pandemic planning, which should be flexible. When the virus emerges,we will be able to understand it better and be able to finetune our planning and response policies. We do not have all the answers now,” said Patel, who is a microbiologist with UK-based National Health Service.

Another meeting has been scheduled for October 8 to take stock of the situation in the event of a second wave.
