Congress leader and Rajya Sabha MP Vijay J Darda has registered a police complaint that a man, posing over phone as former Goa Chief Minister Digambar Kamat, duped him of Rs 34 lakh. The impostor apparently had told Darda that the money is required for the election fund of another leader. The Pune police has picked up a suspect from Solapur with Rs 17 lakh based on information from the sources and call records.

Darda, based in Nagpur, had filed the complaint at Dhantoli police station and it was later transferred to the Bundgarden police, Pune. "Darda in his complaint has said he got a call about 10 days ago. The person at the other end said he was Digambar Kamat. His voice resembled that of the politician's. The person said a leader in north India needed about Rs 34 lakh for election fund. The complaint says he also got calls from aide of that leader," said Senior Inspector Ukhaji Sonavane of Bundgarden police station.

Darda said the trickster started calling him from October 9. "His voice was exactly like that of the former Goa CM, who is my friend. He said some people are coming from Haryana and the money had to be given to them urgently," he said. Darda arranged for the money at Pune, where his associate took it. ACP Gangaram Sakharkar said, the amount was given to the receiver through a friend of Darda called Bamb.

"The caller told that the money was to be handed over in Pune to a person who would carry a Rs 1,000 note bearing a specific number. On October 11, Darda's associate handed over the money to the suspect after the note was shown...," said Sonavane.
