In 14 days, Kajheri man held guilty of attempt to rape

Within 14 days of the UT Police registering an FIR, a local court on Saturday held a Kajheri resident guilty of attempting to rape a three-year-old at his residence. The court of Additional Sessions Judge, Shalini Singh Nagpal found accused Ram Bahadur guilty while the quantum of punishment will be pronounced on Tuesday.

Ram Bahadur alias Veer Bahadur was arrested by the UT Police on March 2 after he allegedly tried to rape the three-year-old. He is the minor's neighbour and allegedly attempted to lure the girl and take her to his residence.

Police said one of the residents of the locality saw the 36-year-old take the child and raised an alarm prompting other residents to gather and 'rescue' the child. As soon as the girl's parents were informed, her mother registered a complaint at the Sector-36 police station. Ram Bahadur was then booked under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act and was sent to judicial custody.

On March 7, he was booked under Sections 342 (wrongful confinement), 363 (kidnapping), 376 (rape) and 511 (punishment for attempting to commit offences punishable with imprisonment for life or other imprisonment) of the Indian Penal Code and Sections 8 and 18 of the Protection of Child Act. He was chargesheeted by the investigating officer of the case.

The statement of the victim's mother was also recorded with the magistrate under Section 164 of the Code of Criminal Procedure. On March 8, copies of the chargesheet were supplied to the accused. On March 12, charges were framed by the court. Two days later all the prosecution witnesses were heard in an hour and the statements of the complainant under Section 313 of the Code of Criminal Procedure were recorded. On March 15, two defence witnesses were heard and their statements were recorded. As per the public prosecutor Manu Kakkar, both the witnesses were painters and were friends of the accused.
