A unique experiment is being undertaken at the citys famous Rose Garden the largest rose garden in Asia. Root stocks of four varieties of Himalayan roses have been planted in the Rose Garden and these would be used to produce hybrids that would add to the existing varieties.
Over the years, the quality of flowers planted in the Rose Garden was gradually deteriorating. Experts felt the need to introduce new plants,as well as make addition to the existing varieties. Now,trials are on to produce hybrid varieties at the Rose Garden.
Dr Satish Narula, horticulturist of Punjab Agricultural University, who is involved in the experiment, said,It is for the first time that varieties available in the Himalayas are being planted in the plains and hybrids being produced. Instead of experimenting in the rose nursery,we have made the Rose Garden as a ground for experiment.
Meanwhile, sprucing up of the garden is being done with around 10 new sections being added. These would be divided on the basis of names of famous personalities, fruits, places and some with unusual names.
The varieties are being procured from different parts of the country as well as some foreign countries.
While Jawaharlal Nehru,Lincoln,Kennedy would be present in one section, another would have Lemon Spice,Delhi Prince and yet another section would have roses with names like Whisky,Lady X and Balle of Punjab.
UT Chief Engineer Surinder Pal said,Experiments are being conducted in the Rose Garden for the first time. We would be adding some varieties after the rose festival. The process of sprucing up the garden is on. New flower beds are being created.
Similar experiments would also be taken up in the Botanical Garden in Sarangpur.
A back-up system is also being set up to ensure replacement of the flowers.
