Two die in separate road accidents
Chandigarh:An ex-serviceman was killed in a road accident after being mowed down by an unidentified vehicle near Mullanpur on Monday evening. In a another case, a pedestrian was crushed to death by a speeding truck in Manimajra on Sunday.
The police said 47-year-old ex-serviceman Mukhtiar Singh of Hoshiarpur village lost control over his motorcycle at the bridge in Mullanpur. He fell on the road and a vehicle, which was coming from behind, ran over him. He was critically injured and was rushed to the PGI, where he was declared dead on arrival. In the other accident, an unidentified pedestrian was killed after being hit by a mini-truck (HR 58 1702) near Bank Colony in Manimajra on Sunday. The truck driver sped away from the spot after the mishap. The victim was rushed to the Sector-16 Government Multi-Specialty Hospital where he died. The police have arrested the truck driver on the charges of causing death due to rash and negligent driving.
Three convicted for murder
Chandigarh:A lower court on Monday convicted three persons of the murder of a youth in 2004. The court of additional district and sessions judge, Raj Rahul Garg, convicted Mohammad Shahid, Rakesh and Vijay, all residents of Manimajra under Section 302 of the IPC. Mahesh Gupta was found dead on November 30, 2004 in a pit near the railway track in Shanti Nagar. The accused had inflicted blows with sharp-edged weapons on the victim, who was a resident of Charan Singh Colony. According to the prosecution, Vijay took Mahesh from his home on the night of November 29, 2004 on the pretext of getting him a job the next day. The quantum of sentence will be pronounced on Tuesday.
