‘October heat’ to blame for rising mercury: Met

The city will continue to feel the heat as indicated by the recent rise in temperatures due to the phenomenon of transition experienced in October, the Met department said. Temperatures have been rising steadily since the beginning of October from around 31.6°C on the first day of the month to the highest recorded at 35°C on Sunday. The minimum temperature over the past few days has also been slightly high. Officials said this is because of the phenomenon called ‘October heat’. “October marks the transition from the south-west monsoon to the retreating monsoon, with the apparent movement of the sun towards the south. Due to the shift to drier conditions, more heat is experienced although the temperatures don’t vary much. This is known as October heat or second summer,” said V K Rajeev, director (weather forecast),India Meteorological Department (IMD).
