The chaotic traffic situation in Kolkata does not only bother commoners but also Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee who on Friday publicly said that controlling traffic poses a huge problem.
At a function to felicitate bravery and honesty award winners organised by Kolkata police, Bhattacharjee praised the policemen for serving the people day and night.
At night when everybody, including the government sleeps, the police remain awake. But it is impossible for the police to maintain law and order in the city if they do not get the cooperation from the citizen, said Bhattacharjee.
During the programme, a 28-year-old car driver was felicitated for protecting 11 students from three miscreants who were trying to tease them and kidnap two of them while they were on their way to school.
Despite being shot at, Binod Jaisowara drove the vehicle to the school. Jaisowara has now been inducted onto Kolkata police as a home guard.
I am very happy but I do not know whether I will be able to join the police as a home guard since I prefer driving, Jaisowara said.
The Kolkata police also inducted three other award winners as home guards and civic policemen. Two taxi drivers Dipak Kumar Roy and Harindra Sahani were awarded for helping the police in returning a huge amount of money, which had been left in their taxis by the passengers.
