In laughing spirits

High Spirits is organising another edition of its popular Freakin' Hilarious Night series on January 9, this time featuring stand up artistes Samson Koletkar and Shyam Bhat. Koletkar is a first-generation immigrant in America and brings cerebral, witty, clean and thought-provoking humour with a global perspective. His subtle satire addresses religious and political hypocrisies, social issues and day-to-day absurdities of human nature. Shyam Bhat, a psychiatrist by day and stand up comedian by night, began his career in the US as well. After winning the Raw open mic contest at the Comedy Store in Mumbai, he has been a regular performer in Bangalore and Mumbai. His humour is ironic and has witty insights into culture, relationships and changing India.

Mood music

Classical vocalist Dr. Kalyani Bondre will present a unique concert titled Bhaav Rang Raganche on January 12 at Patrakar Bhavan Auditorium. The concert marks the launch of Bondre's Hindustani classical music album released under the label Fountain Music Company. The concert will explore the various moods and expressions that different ragas depict through a variety of compositions like Khayal, Natyasangeet, Bhaavgeet, Bhajan, Ghazal as well as select classical based film songs. Padmabhushan Shobhanatai Ranade, flautist Pandit Keshav Ginde, violinist Ustad Faiyaaz Hussain Khan and sitarist Ustad Usman Khan will be the guests of honour at the event. Entry to the concert is free and open to all and will continue from 6 to 8 pm.

Musical treat

Vasantotsav, an annual mega music festival organised in the city will take place between January 18 and 20 this year. The festival will begin with a performance by Amaan & Ayaan Ali Khan, renowned Sarod players and sons of Ustaad Amjad Ali Khan. The festival will also award Mandar Gadgil, the disciple of Vijay Koparkar for his talent in classical music. The festival will additionally feature performances by tabla player Yogesh Samsi, Rahul Deshpande, Anand Bhate and Jayteerth Meyundi, as well as Kabir Vani by Mukhtiyar Ali and Kaluram Bamaniya. The festival will take place at New English School on the Ramanbaug Grounds between 6 to 10 pm each day.
