In MP,meet sterilisation target or be punished

Sterlisation is a prestige issue in Sagar district of Madhya Pradesh.

Sterlisation is a prestige issue in Sagar district of Madhya Pradesh.

The district administration has told its employees to put at stake their prestige in organising sterilisation camps over the next two months.

Every block in the district will have to organise three prestige camps and ensure the participation of a minimum 100 people.

Employees holding successful camps will be rewarded but the rest will have to face consequences proportionate to their failures.

Employees will be allowed to take the idea of prestige further by promising priority in gun licences to lure males to these camps. A gun is a status symbol in the Bundelkhand region whose entry point is Sagar.

Sagar collector Manish Shrivastava said it would be easy for holders of gun licences to find jobs as security guards.

Even unmarried males will be entitled to these benefits if they can inspire five married individuals to go under the scalpel.

Every field employee will have a specific target and they will escape punishment only if they meet the target or exceed the number.

MP is observing 2010-2011 as a family planning year and plans to cover seven lakh,or one per cent of its approximate population, under the sterilisation drive.

Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan said that in the first nine months of the programme,as many as 3,72,000 persons were sterilised till December 31,which is a record in the last decades.
