In two weeks, EC to upload all poll booths, data to online map

All information related to elections will soon be available on an online map.

In two weeks, the Election Commission is expected to complete collecting geographical co-ordinates of all polling stations in Delhi and will upload it to the map.

This is one of EC's series of tech-savvy initiatives for Delhi's Assembly polls in 2013.

Delhi Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) Vijay Dev on Friday said all of Delhi's 11,594 polling stations would soon be plotted on Google Maps. "The exercise to get coordinates of all the polling stations is underway and should be completed in two weeks. Each polling station will be visible on the map," Dev said.

According to Dev, the EC has developed an application to upload information relevant to a particular polling station on the map. "On clicking on the station, the voter will get the name of the booth officer, the returning officer and a link to its electoral rolls. People will be able to download all this information as a PDF file," Dev said.

In the future, Dev said, the EC would develop a cross-platform application for online registration in a bid to enthuse young voters. "The present system for online registration is a little complicated. We are working on a system where this will be made available through a mobile phone application. A voter only needs to enter his/her name and address and an auto-complete feature would fill in the remaining details," Dev said.

The EC is also in the process of a summary revision of electoral rolls in most states in the country. The process to publish draft rolls will begin on October 15. "Between October 15 and November 14, the EC will hear claims and objections from voters for addition and deletions. From November 15 to December 14, all cases will be processed," Dev said.
