Incidents of rape and sexual harassment have seen a nearly 11 per cent and 13 per cent increase in the country from 2006 to 2008,according to data from the National Crime Records Bureau.
The total number of rape cases was 19,348 in 2006,20,737 in 2007 and 21,467 in 2008,the Rajya Sabha was informed on Monday.
This amounts to an increase of about 10.9 per cent between 2006 and 2008,Minister of State for Women and Child Development Krishna Tirath said in a written reply.
Patriachal mindset, objectification of women and societal tolerance of violence against women are some of the possible reasons for such crimes, she said.
As per NCRB data,a total number of 46,583,49,884 and 52,627 cases were registered for molestation and eve-teasing in 2006,2007 and 2008 respectively.
Using molestation and eve-teasing as proxy indicators for sexual harassment, which have registered an increase of about 13 per cent between 2006 and 2008,it can be assumed that the cases of sexual harassment as also incidents of atrocities against working women may be on the rise,Tirath said.
