An indefinite curfew, imposed here following protests over the killing of a youth allegedly in a fake encounter, was relaxed for nine hours on Wednesday from early this morning.
Official sources said the curfew, clamped in Imphal East and West districts of Manipur since August 4,was relaxed to enable the people to buy essential items.
The curfew was partially relaxed over the weekend, but reimposed on Tuesday following protesters trying to defy the restrictions.
Authorities said the curfew was relaxed for nine hours from 5:00 am this morning. During the relaxation, banks and government offices would also remain open.
The curfew was clamped after several organisations led by major social outfit Apunba Lup began agitation over the killing of one Sanjit by police commandos in an alleged fake encounter at Imphal market complex on July 23.
A pregnant woman was also killed and five others were injured by stray bullets in the incident.
The outfit has been demanding resignation of Chief Minister O Ibobi Singh over the encounter.
The sources, however, said the situation had improved since Apunba Lub had submitted a memorandum to Governor Gurbachan Jagat on Tuesday.
