Taking a cautious stand on the developments in the neighbouring country of Myanmar, India on Tuesday urged the military regime of the country to “consider undertaking an inquiry into the recent incidents and use of forces” while expressing “concern at the present situation” prevailing there.

During a meeting with Myanmar Foreign Minister Nyan Win on the margins of the ongoing General Debate of the UN General Assembly in New York on Tuesday, External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee said: “As a close and friendly neighbour, India hoped to see peace, prosperity and stability in Myanmar.”

Though India has been watching the developments in Myanmar closely, it does not want to be seen as interfering in the internal affairs of its neighbour. At the same time, India wants to have engagements with all its neighbours.

Myanmar also figured in Mukherjee’s meeting with UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon on Monday.

Foreign Secretary Shiv Shanker Menon met UN special envoy Ibrahim Gambari ahead of the latter’s visit to Myanmar on September 24.

“These meetings took place in context of India’s continuing engagement on these issues,” a statement from the Ministry of External Affairs said.

Last week, New Delhi had expressed “concern” and urged dialogue to resolve differences. Analysts say India is walking a diplomatic tightrope, balancing energy and strategic concerns with a commitment to democracy.
