  • India and Bhutan have agreed to expedite work on hydro-power generation in the Himalayan nation, which has set a target of 10,000 MW by 2020. New Delhi also assured assistance to Thimpu in developing its IT and e-governance projects.

The next meeting of the Empowered Joint Group to fast-track implementation of hydropower projects will be held in August ‘09, the joint statement said. The first meeting was held in New Delhi in March ‘09 after signing of the Protocol to the 2006 Agreement on Cooperation in Hydropower.

Meanwhile, visiting Bhutanese PM Jigmi Y Thinley apprised Prime Minister Manmohan Singh of the preparations for the 16th SAARC summit to be held in Thimpu next April. Thinley, who is on a goodwill visit to India till July 3, is the first head of government to visit India after the new UPA government took over.

The meetings were “very friendly, warm and cordial”, reflecting the spirit of trust, cooperation and deep understanding that mark the bilateral relations between India and Bhutan, the statement said.

Strategic Importance to IndiaBy: Giri Girishankar | 04-Jul-2009 Reply | Forward India's ambitions of being a regional power will be well served by assisting neighboring countries like Bhutan and Nepal in their economic and democratic development. India has to win the friendship, confidence and loyalty of these countries. This is of strategic importance to India. It is no secret that other countries in the region, like China, cannot wait to beat us in the game; these countries do not necessarily mean well to India.
Indo-Bhutan fast track power projectsBy: gautam | 04-Jul-2009 Reply | Forward It is good news because tiny nation needs help from India to improve its infra structure. On its part India must ensure that agreement is implemented in its totality and to the satisfaction of Thimpu. If there is dilly dallying in completing project as per the stipulated time frame then there is possibility that Thimpu might look elsewhere, meaning China, to meet its needs.Indian culture is notorious in implementation and delays are nothing but are being looked as inevitable for the authrioty in charge.Nepal has already started looking further northward because they donot trust Indian leadership words. One hopes Thimpu is not let down by Indian beauracracy which is outrightly corrupt and politicised.
