Expressing concern over the terror attack on Indian embassy in Kabul, India's envoy to the United Nations Hardeep Singh Puri has asked the world leaders to negotiate an international treaty to tackle terrorism expeditiously.

"Our Embassy in Kabul was again subjected to yet another terrorist attack, which has resulted in injury of Indian security personnel as well as death of large number of Afghan civilians," Puri told the committee of the General Assembly that handles a range of social, humanitarian affairs and human rights issues.

"While it is important for the international community to condemn terrorism and these attacks in an unequivocal manner, it is also critical that we strengthen the legal framework in the fight against terrorism," he noted.

Earlier, the UN Chief Ban Ki-moon condemned the attacks at the Indian embassy. The Security Council also deplored the "reprehensible" attack demanding that those responsible be brought to justice.

On its website, the Taliban write that one of their "martyrs" carried out suicide car bomb attack in a heavily fortified diplomatic area and added that the Indian embassy "was the main target".

The top Indian diplomat stressed that in view of the growing threat of terror attacks, it was time to wrap up the draft for the 'Comprehensive Convention on International Terrorism (CCIT)' since the document had been under negotiations for years.

"Countless innocent lives have been lost to heinous terrorist attacks. It is imperative that our resolve against perpetrators of such attacks now be manifested in a strong and resolute manner," Puri said.

not that badBy: swarna | 09-Oct-2009 Reply | Forward this will be a good effort provided the clauses are agreeable among international actors. see EU is doing good. India can not handle it alone because its not in our land. there is doubt how far beleaguered government of Afghanistan can assist. over all this is a good thought.
Terrorism against IndiaBy: ahirwan | 09-Oct-2009 Reply | Forward The fact remains,India is being targeted by outside forces, such as Pakistan. That country under the guise of alignment with the USA is propping up its own political fortunes, is allowing Taliban / AlQaeda to spread Jehad through suicide attacks ,from Pakistani territory. Unless the International Community through UN muster up enough courage to mount a counter attack on complicity of Pakistan Government, India,Afghanistan,SriLanka would suffer indefinitely. So KPS Gill is on course by urging unified international action against Taliban/Al Qaeda .
Terrorism against IndiaBy: Mike Agate | 09-Oct-2009 Reply | Forward Why should anybody listen to India.Have you all forgotten that India was the one who broke the moratorium of not negotiating with hijakers / terrorists when the Indian Airlines flight was hijecked
Pathetic cryBy: Ajay Chavhan | 09-Oct-2009 Reply | Forward Nothing is going to improve for us unless our government or people DECIDE to do something about it. Congress, never. That is one reason for recent uprisings by Naxals. Not all of Indians can take what this shit government is doling out. Some one will retaliate with more vehemence than the others. And looking at the usual fiasco there and on international front, it is bound to escalate. These guys do not have a clue on how to govern, still they crowd to do so. That means they want to loot us.
Pathetic cry---By: romesh.sharma | 09-Oct-2009 Reply | Forward Mr.Chavhan, not that they WANT TO but they had been looting since India got Independence and still they are doing. Now a days they are on fast-track for luxuries have become too expensive.
Terror treaty. - India's Joke - ask advice from KPS GillBy: Vijay | 09-Oct-2009 Reply | Forward Why do we need a terror treaty? We have fine example of eliminating terror in Punjab, headed by KPS Gill. Who followed the example of inspiring Sikh Hari Singh Nalwa. The strategy was simple, you terrorise my people and I terrorise your family and friends.
What the hell?By: Santosh Bhat | 09-Oct-2009 Reply | Forward Why the hell does India want INTERNATIoNAL TREATY? Cant we handle our problems? This is a spineless response to an attack on us. I dread to think what will happen of any country declares war on us.
