When it comes to organ donation, India has to do a lot of catching up with other countries. While only .08 per million people donate organs in India, in Spain, 36 per million do.

This was revealed by Dr B S Aulakh, professor of urology and head, transplant unit Dayanand Medical College and Hospital. He said that a person who suffers from brain death can save lives of eight people and can be of great help to 50 other people as kidneys, lungs, heart, eyes, blood vessels, tissues, blood vessels, cartilage etc can be donated to the needy patients. Even bones can be used in case of fractures.

Dr Aulakh, who was addressing a gathering on “World Day for Organ Donation and Transplantation” at Kundan Vidya Mandir, which was organised by an NGO named GLODAS (Gift of Life-Organ Donation Awareness Society) in collaboration with DMCH, said, “Tamil Nadu has already implemented it in intensive care units of its hospitals that if a person dies of brain death, his other organs could be used to save the lives of others. I wish in our state also it gets implemented.”

Dr Aulakh, who is the president of GLODAS, said that organ transplantation was a life-saving surgery. There is a huge gap between demand and supply as far as the organ transplant is concerned. An organ or a tissue transplant can significantly improve the quality of life of the recipient and sometimes it is the only hope of survival for the patient. On the occasion, students of College of Nursing, DMCH, presented a skit conveying the message of organ donation in an impressive way.
