India today lodged a protest with Pakistan over its so-called Gilgit-Baltistan Empowerment and Self Governance Order,2009 and its move to construct the China-assisted Bunji Hydroelectric Project in Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir.
This was conveyed to Pakistans Deputy High Commissioner Riffat Masood by senior MEA officials in New Delhi, and to the Pakistani foreign ministry by the Indian mission in Islamabad, sources said.
On the Gilgit-Baltistan order, the Ministry of External Affairs said: Pakistan has for the past six decades denied basic democratic rights to the people in those parts of the state of Jammu and Kashmir under its illegal occupation. The entire state of Jammu and Kashmir is an integral part of India… The so-called order is yet another cosmetic exercise intended to camouflage Pakistans illegal occupation.
The deal for the 7,000 MW Bunji hydroelectric project was reportedly signed during President Asif Ali Zardaris visit to Beijing in August.
