The trend of women opting for delayed pregnancies is on the rise in India too. There are more and more career-oriented women who opt to stay single till late.

Dr Suhani Verma, in-charge of the Artificial In-Vitro Fertilisation Unit, of Delhi’s Indraprastha Apollo Hospital, says: “One of the major reasons for such treatments is delayed marriages followed by delayed pregnancies. Almost 4 out of 10 cases of infertility that we receive are of women who opt for late pregnancies, owing to career and financial restraints.”

Shedding light on the popular procedures in India to treat infertility, Dr Sujata Dalvi, consultant obstetrician and gynaecologist, St Elizabeth Hospital, Mumbai, adds: “The first treatment is putting the patient on Ovulation Induction Medicine, during which we suggest that the couple follow plan relations. Every alternate day during the fertile period is ideal.”

Next is IUI (Intra Uterine Insemination). It is usually recommended to women above 35, who fail to conceive even after trying for a year. The last resort is test tube babies. Besides, there are other high-end reproductive techniques, which are limited to those who can afford them, she adds.
