India summons Pak envoy,lodges strong protest over killing of five Army men

Antony said the Army is ready to take all steps to uphold the sanctity of the LoC.

Reacting angrily to the killing of five Indian soldiers on the Line of Control (LoC),India on Tuesday summoned Pakistan Deputy High Commissioner,lodging a strong protest over the incident in the Poonch sector of Jammu and Kashmir.

This came even as Defence Minister A K Antony termed the killing of Army men as an unprovoked incident.

“The attack was carried out by 20 heavily-armed terrorists in Pakistan army uniform. We strongly condemn the unprovoked incident,” said Antony.

The Defence Minister further asserted that the Indian Army is fully ready to take all necessary steps to uphold the sanctity of the LoC.

The attack took place earlier on Tuesday on the Indian side of the border when the troops were on a regular patrol.

The Indian troops were caught in one of the deadliest cross border attacks on the LoC in recent times. Sources said that the soldiers belonged to the Bihar regiment.

This is the biggest attack in the Poonch area after the killing of two soldiers and beheading of one in January that had triggered off a series of fire exchanges. Sources said there are no reports of mutilation in today’s attack.

Army Chief Gen Bikram Singh is taking stock of the situation,Army sources said in Delhi.

The incident could cast a shadow on the resumption of the Indo-Pak dialogue process expected later this month. Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and his Pakistani counterpart Nawaz Sharif are slated to meet in New York next month on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly session.

Soon after the news of the attack broke out,Opposition members in both Houses of Parliament slammed the government. Both the Houses were adjourned till noon amid protest by the BJP and other Opposition parties.

Speaking in the Rajya Sabha,BJP’s Ravishankar Prasad said that the incident was serious.

Meanwhile,Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi took to microblogging site Twitter to react on the incident.

Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah also slammed Pakistan for the attack.
