Brumby said he was able to assure Indian authorities that his government was doing all it could to curb attacks on young Indians.

Victorian premier John Brumby on Tuesday said his recent India trip was fruitful and he "certainly got the message out that the state government was taking concrete action" to prevent any violence against the Indian community in Australia.

Brumby said he was able to assure Indian authorities that his government was doing all it could to curb attacks on young Indians.

"I visited a number of educational establishments, I spoke at a number of business gatherings and I think I certainly got the message out that we are taking concrete action in Victoria," he was quoted by a media report.

"(We have) more police, a bigger police budget, stronger powers, plus a student support package to support overseas students who study in our state," he who was quoted as saying by ABC radio.

Brumby said "Having just spent eight days in India, there are certainly those in India whose concerns have been raised about events in Melbourne over the last few months.

"But for every one person you would meet there who would raise a concern, there would be another two who would say that they know students, or know family, or know friends, who are in Melbourne and believe it to be one of the safest cities

anywhere in the world and they are 100 per cent satisfied with the educational experience that they have got," he said. Brumby said though there could be drop in Indian student enrolments in Australia, it would be largely restricted to private-run courses.

Victorian premierBy: shekar | 06-Oct-2009 Reply | Forward Mr. Victorian Prime Minister, STOP LYING. Your words only proved the kind of racist you and your countrymen are. I can only say that the true nature of Australian is reflected in their cricket teams colours i.e. BRIGHT YELLOW. Your actions in brushing off the incident of assaulting of the Taxi Driver who sought payment by saying that the assailant is a good kid and condoning the action by saying the "kid must have been drunk" goes to prove this fact. We all know that Australia was a penal colony during victorian times, and the distorted genes must have passed down to the present generation of Australians, but that is no excuse for them to flaunt their criminal character or for the words of the Victorian Premier (sic).
