Indian films flop due to lack of original content: Assocham

Assocham said the lack of original content is the main reason for the box office failure rate of Indian films, which is as high as 95 per cent.

Assocham today said the lack of original content is the main reason for the box office failure rate of Indian films, which is as high as 95 per cent.

“Although India produces a large quantity of content,it is often unoriginal and does not match international standards,” an Assocham paper said.

The poor content quality is also limiting the country¿s outsourcing potential in the areas of gaming, animation, runway productions and other non-mainstream areas,it said.

The paper points out that the factors contributing to the poor quality of content are the lack of best practise processes and unavailability of high quality training and educational institutions in this sector.

“This has resulted in creation of a workforce that is under-trained and under-performing vis-à-vis global standards,” Assocham said.

Over five million people work (directly and indirectly) in the sector.

“Only a coincidence brings the best of them together on a project and ensures its success, while most other projects meet with failure,” the paper noted.

The focus must therefore be on raising world class creative talent by building superior inter-disciplinary creative and performing arts training and educational institutions, the chamber said.
