‘Indian hegemony continues to harm relations with neighbours’

  • “ Nobody can deny that today’s India is a power. In recent years, Indians have become more narrow-minded and intolerable of outside criticism as nationalism sentiment rises, with some of them even turning to hegemony. It can be proved by India’s recent provocation on border issues with China.

Given the country’s history, hegemony is a hundred per cent result of British colonialism. Dating back to the era of British India, the country covered a vast territory including present-day India, Pakistan, Myanmar, Bangladesh as well as Nepal. India took it for granted that it could continue to rule the large area when Britain ended its colonialism in South Asia. A previous victim of colonialism and hegemony started to dream about developing its own hegemony. Obsessed with such mentality, India turned a blind eye to the concessions China had repeatedly made over the disputed border issues, and refused to drop the pretentious airs when dealing with neighbours like Pakistan.

Many Indians didn’t know that Jawaharlal Nehru, the first Prime Minister of India, had once said that India could not play an inferior role in the world, and it should either be a superpower or disappear.

Although the pursuit of being a superpower is justifiable, the dream of being a superpower held by Indians appears impetuous. The dream of superpower is mingled with the thought of hegemony, which places the South Asian giant in an awkward situation and results in repeated failure.

Throughout the history, India has constantly been under foreign rule. The essence for the rise of India lies in how to be an independent country, to learn to solve the complicated ethnic and religious issues, to protect the country from terrorist attacks, to boost economic development as well as to put more efforts on poverty alleviation.

    ... contd.

Open your eyesBy: Bill O'Reilly | 18-Oct-2009 Reply | Forward I agree with this article, China has as much a claim to the disputed areas as India has, yet India don't seem to want to hear China's side. That my friend is called arrogance. China was (and probably still is) willing to settle the issue and move forward if India just gave the Tawang area over and acknowledge the Aksai Chin (which has been Chinese far longer than it has been "Indian") region as Chinese territory. In other words China was willing to give up roughly 90,000 sq kms in exchange for India giving up 38,000 sq kms and the Tawang area (which I believe doesn't add up to much area-wise anyway). China is willing to get the smaller share of the pie to settle things, but India in its arrogance wants the whole pie, and therein lies the problem, as China has its pride too and so is not willing to give up the whole pie, though they would be happy with a smaller piece of it. China's done similar deals with Russia, Vietnam, Burma etc. so I don't see why India can't compromise too.
China - Border resolutionBy: Just a well travelled Private citizen of India | 19-Oct-2009 Reply | Forward Russia, Vietnam, Burma are communist and /or one man rule countries and it is easier to impose a resolution . India is a democratic country, but that should not slow things . it is a very peace loving country and the land of Gandhi. China being such a vast country and looking to be world leader should also take a broad view with India. At best Indian leaders might be able to accept the current status co as the formal border ( very tough sell) . China would need to forgo the Tawang area . This in my opinion would go a long way for both as the two countries. The potential is humongous for both countries and would one of the single most important event in the century
Hagemony - Arrogance you agree ?By: Sankar | 18-Oct-2009 Reply | Forward India states that Tibet is not Chinese , that is the pie you need to nail in your head ?Arrogance ? If one is passive , yeh my friend , the whole world has a tendency to ride on it. I would say thanks for sharing your perspective but that would be too passive. And then you might be tempted to label my position and pass judgment on my character .May be I need to claim your writing hand and you might compromise with your middle finger or else I will call you Bill O'Reilly hegemony and you I am sure you will agree.
Open your eyes furtherBy: Bill O'Reilly | 18-Oct-2009 Reply | Forward India has already acknowledged Tibet as part of China in exchange for China acknowledging Sikkim as part of India. That case is closed and for India to backtrack would make it lose credibility in the eyes of the world. The only thing left unresolved is the Arunachal Pradesh/Aksai Chin region, and as I've said before, China was willing to settle the issue years ago by acknowldedging India's claim to Arunachal Pradesh (minus Tawang) in exchange for India acknowledging China's claim to Aksai Chin and the Tawang area of Arunachal Pradesh. This proposal was unacceptable due to Indian greed (because they wanted the whole pie) and arrogance and so fast forward to the future, China has taken a much tougher stance, matching arrogance with arrogance.
Open you mind - that is the keyBy: Sankar | 19-Oct-2009 Reply | Forward Cut this crap about "lose credibility in the eyes of the world". Sikkim joined India on its own accord Tibet was annexed, and the people driven out, or murdered. If China has not lost face on that count , there is nothing to lose face any where. By the by Bill O'Reilly is a beautiful name . Crap with your greed ,imperialism and arrogance. This is the real hegemony as you say - is perused by China. Will not let its neighbors live in peace, how ever far from arrogance one tries to be - has the guts to call peace loving country labels and considers itself a super power.
Cool down guys!By: Anurag | 17-Oct-2009 Reply | Forward Hey guys, cool down all. This is not an article originating in Indian Express, this is an editorial in a Chinese mouthpiece which IE has printed here to inform its readers of what trash the Chinese govt is feeding its citizenry. Kudos to IE for this. It is important to know what the enemy is saying. As a policy (commendable I would say),IE publishes reports/comments that have appeared in communist, Pakistani and RSS newspapers too.
Chinese hegemonyBy: Anurag | 17-Oct-2009 Reply | Forward Replace India with 'China' in this article, and see how most of it appears so accurate! The Chinese know themselves only too well. What better than to attribute their own negative attitudes onto their neighbour whom they have always considered their rival in regional influence. Chinese hegemonic attitude towards smaller countries like Vietnam is well-known, its bullying of Taiwan is so transparent and so China-like, and of course the repression and mini-genocide they have been committing in Tibet over the last few decades is less than the Holocaust only in scale, not in ferocity or determination.
unbelievableBy: Anuradha | 16-Oct-2009 Reply | Forward "India turned a blind eye to the concessions China had repeatedly made over the disputed border issues..." !!!And why is the whole article in ".."? sounds more like whatyou would read in Xinhua not an Indian newspaper.
Article reflects the true status of I.E...By: Andy | 16-Oct-2009 Reply | Forward If this kind off statement would have been given by any political party (other then congress) this very news paper would have asked for an apology from him and other would have asked for the resignation. But unfortunately media which shouts from the roof top about accountability never shows any accountability. I can say for sure that Nehru never gave any such statement—this is a fictional statement from the writer. More over this editorial shows the knowledge level of the writer and the editor of the news paper I suggest them please go and read the social science books from NCERT from class 6-10th. Well the only silver lining of the article is that is shows the standard of the I>E now a days which is… Crap…..Mr S gupta please get some new staff and if you have earned enough then please retire...
SourceBy: Sankar | 17-Oct-2009 Reply | Forward This article is a from the editors of The People's Daily ( dated 2009.10.14) , and not IE.
