  • Indian students' apex body slammed the Victorian government's decision not to allow them to speak during a 'harmony walk' to be led by the state premier on Sunday to promote multiculturalism in the wake of a spate of attacks on the community members in Australia.

In a statement, the Federation of Indian student Association (FISA) said on Saturday that it believed that by not allowing Indian students to speak at the harmony walk the organisers have largely undone the positive efforts the Government hastaken in the last couple of weeks.

"It is unfortunate that the Government is trying to exclude students from any meaningful discussion. We support multiculturalism, but we do not support politicians trying to divert attention and debate away from the victims, the unsafe streets, the rising crime rate and the failure of the justice system," FISA president Amit Menghani said.

Menghani said that Australia has a well-established and generally harmonious multicultural society.

"This Harmony Walk was called to express concern about the safety and well-being of Indian International students whose life and welfare is being challenged routinely by people who do not support multiculturalism. This Walk should be sending a message to people who are rejecting multiculturalism through their attacks on Indian students," he said.

Asking government to reconsider its decision, Menghani said the events that have led to the walk were related to the safety and security of foreign students, but the walk now looks like a publicity stunt.

Just FYI @Winston Mahanti By: Flavian Hardcastle | 14-Jul-2009 Reply | Forward Yes I would want justice, but no I would not "call every Indian on the planet" names. I certainly would not try and pretend that multiculturalism rallies were all about me, as if my ethnic group is the only one that counts. I think this is basically a case of a handful of student politicians trying to beat their little chests, and show off how much influence they think they have.
Special treatment!By: Winston Mahanti | 13-Jul-2009 Reply | Forward I agree that no special treatment should be meted out to one indegenous group. But Mr. HARDcastle, What would you do if you were a victim urself? Would you not want justice? Well again, we all differ in our methodologies on how we want justice done to you! What would you do if similar incidents happened to Australians in India? Bang India and call every Indian on the planet all the names you find in some encyclopaedia?
Australia - intellectually bankrupt countryBy: Sameer Gupta | 13-Jul-2009 Reply | Forward I agree with Flavian Hardcastle and Brian - why should the Indians get special treatment? Having said that, I must also say that, having lived in the US and Australia, I would much rather prefer to live in the US, in spite of the high crime rate in the US. Australia is getting more and more intellectually bankrupt day by day. Intellectualism in Australia is going through a free fall. Oz wasn't always like this, it used to be a much better place for thinkers, but not any more. -Sameer, Mumbai.
Attempt to hijackBy: Brian | 13-Jul-2009 Reply | Forward This was nothing more than a cyncial attempt by self aggrandising Indian students to hijack a peaceful display supporting multiculturalism. They should know when to just shut up and join hands with with the good people of Melbourne in a show of unity. You are just alienating yourselves further.
Vic govt silences Indian studentsBy: Megh | 13-Jul-2009 Reply | Forward Drug peddlers and habitual boozers cant call indians dubius. anyways, why cant the indians just work towards getting Australia declared an " Apartheid" nation? Look at China- they arrested senior Australian executives on charges of spyng just to teach these jokers a lesson. India too should do the same but not to the same extent but atleast kick out some defaulting aussies? even the pacific island nations are backing out off supporting australia! This country is loosing its sheen. It has literally no international significance other than exporting raw material. It doesnt feature in the G-14 grouping either nor holds relevance in A-P region. so what is australia- a nation of convicts and ill informed post world war -2 white refugees who fled europe to come and occupy the indegenous land?
