  • Gulzar, arguably one of India’s most influential poets hardly needs any more awards to prove his genius. Nevertheless, he has been conferred with the Lifetime Achievement Award at the opening ceremony of the 11 th Osian’s Cinefan festival at Siri Fort auditorium for his contribution to Indian cinema. “Even if you get another award you don’t really stop working, do you?” quips the 73-year-old artiste. For the lyricist-writer-director sees awards as a ‘symbol of reassurance’. “This kind of reassurance is an important measurement for an artiste. It jerks you out of slumber,” he adds. Last year, Mrinal Sen received the Lifetime Achievement Award from Osian’s. But despite his experience in films Gulzar saab refrains from talking about his work. “Too much has already been written about my previous work. I don’t want to get into that area,” he says, busy working for his new project Raavan.

Gulzar saab will hold his Life Time Achievement Awardee’s Masterclass on the History of the Hindi Film Lyrics at 11am Sunday, October 25 at Siri Fort. Entry is free.

The great lyricist GulzarBy: Astha Jaroli (MP) | 25-Oct-2009 Reply | Forward The contribution of Gulzar as an outstanding and popular lyricist of all times cannot be ignored. He belongs to the group of lyricists - Shailendra and Neeraj who were having a literary background. The most significant aspect of his contribution is that he has written songs for 'Bandini' starring Nutan and then 'Guru' starring ' Aishwarya Rai.There is a time-gap of more than 40 years between these films. My intention is not to under-estimate the contribution of lyricists like Sahir Ludhianvi, Shakil Badauni,Kaifi Azmi, Gulshan Bawra,Anand Bakshi,Indivar, Javed Akhtar etc. but Gulzar is most versatile and 'evergreen'lyricist.
India's KeatsBy: Jafa | 25-Oct-2009 Reply | Forward We often go overboard while praising our distinguished people. Gulzar is not a great poet by any standard. He is just a successful film lyric writer or versifier. The only poet who was once called - and perhaps for some good reasons - the Keats of India was Mazaj Lucknanvi who died in early sixties of same disease (TB) and at about the same age (25). People who make such comments do not know about Urdu poetry. Gulzar does not even come to the standards of Shakil Budauni or Sahir Ludhianvi, two other film lyricists.
