India is set to produce an additional 40 MTPA of steel in next three years taking its total steel production to 120 MTPA by 2012-13,a top official said. "We will have installed steel production capacity at 120 MTPA by 2012-13," Union Steel secretary P K Mishra said after presiding over an Interministerial Group meeting on Friday. Stating that the country was currently producing 80 MTPA of steel,Mishra said that an additional 15 MTPA steel production was achieved in 2010-11 and equal volume would be added during the year 2012-13. Replying to a question on earlier target of producing 124 MTPA steel by 2012,Mishra said having installed capacity of 120 MTPA by 2012-13 was also good. Orissa's contribution to steel production of the country remained negligible as some mega steel projects like that of Posco and ArcelorMittal were yet to be grounded. Both Posco and ArcelorMittal could have added 12MTPA steel each to the steel production in the country had they been implemented at scheduled period, officials said. However,Tata Steel,Visa Steel,Essar and Jindal Steel and Power Limited have been progressing. While JSPL was likely to produce 2MTPA steel by 2013,Essar Steel Orissa Limited had set a target of producing 3MTPA steel by 2013. Visa Steel Limited had already commissioned 0.3 MTPA capacity steel plant,an official at the steel and mines department said.
