  • Indira gandhi
Indra Gandhi was assassinated by two of her Sikh body guards at her residence on October 31, 1984.

Former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, who fell to the bullets of her bodyguards 25 years ago, was remembered on Saturday across the country which recalled her momentous decisions, some of which were hailed and riled in equal measure even in her life time.

In the national capital, Vice President Hamid Ansari, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Congress President Sonia Gandhi and her son Rahul paid floral tributes to the late leader at her memorial 'Shakti Sthal' on the banks of river Yamuna.

Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit, Union Ministers Sushil Kumar Shinde and A K Antony, Congress leaders Ahmed Patel, Ajay Maken and R K Dhawan, for long her political aide, were among the others who paid homage to the late prime minister.

Gandhi fell victim to her own bodyguards – Satwant Singh, Beant Singh and Kehar Singh -- who pumped 31 bullets into the 66-year-old charismatic leader.

Two of her momentous but controversial decisions invoke strong reactions even today.

Siddharth Shankar Ray, former West Bengal Chief Minister and a barrister who was consulted by Gandhi on crucial occasions, says the decision to impose emergency in 1975 was taken by the Cabinet in a matter of minutes and there was no opposition.

Dhawan, her political aide, remembers that the country was headed for a "serious" situation when there was a nation-wide rail strike and all sorts of confusion was sought to be created. The Allahabad High Court judgement and the Opposition demanded her resignation.

In the Cabinet, Dhawan said there was a demand that "something drastic" needs to be done.

It was Sikhs who messed with IndiaBy: ABC | 04-Nov-2009 Reply | Forward First compensate Hindus that were killed by Sikhs in a decade long terror campaign.
How successive Congress government supported conversion? By: Jacob Varghese | 02-Nov-2009 Reply | Forward When we want to convert a person, we send police his/her's house, and then he/she is booked on false charges so that his/her's family, friends and relatives on knowing outcast's him/her. Once he/she is isolated in his/her community we send our people to him/her to make friend. Then we tap his/her phone and follows him/her for a certain period to turn every situations against him/her so that he/she is forced out of his/her job if working or his/her business suffers losses in such a way that he/she does not go back to it again. Then we Coerce this person to be a full time priest
Why remember Indira onlyBy: Sane Voice | 01-Nov-2009 Reply | Forward Why not remember thousands of innocent men women and children who lost their lives for no fault of theirs? It is shameful that the judiciary of India could not give justice to the people. Such a judiciary system should hang their heads in shame. This day should be remembered as a day of shame for India and certaily not for one person, Indira Gandhi.
Ignorant will Never Understand Indira Gandhi's ContributionsBy: ABC | 01-Nov-2009 Reply | Forward It saddens me that some people can never open their eyes. Their prejudices will tie them for rest of their lives and will tie down their children to come. They will brainwash their children for another generation of self-loathing and cynicism. Only if these people could see what 100s of millions saw. Indira Gandhi was thought as a safe seat warmer to cash on Nehru's legacy while she became a legacy by herself. That led politicians to attack her personally. She had to continuously fight off these evil doers while she served the people. Look at these hypocrates! Patel (Patel still belongs to Congress) is hero for occupying Hyderabad that is contained entirely within in India and when Indira brings entire Pakistan to its knees and breaks it into two in just two weeks, it is not a big deal?
indira gandhiBy: daljit | 01-Nov-2009 Reply | Forward If everyone is remembering indira they should mention how many people were killed after the death of Indira Gandhi. how come not even a single Tamil was killed or burned after a Tamil killed Rajiv Gandhi. that is why sikh community do not trust the government or other leaders who wants north Indians to be second class citizens in Maharashtara because with their hard work they are prospering in Bombay and other cities in Maharashtara.
Indira GandhiBy: Major (Retd) Virendra Sharma | 02-Nov-2009 Reply | Forward daljit, search your heart first. Indira Gandhi could have easily removed the sikh guards from her security. But she did not, because she had nothing against sikhs. The guards, whose responsibility and duty was to protect her, killed her in cold blood. You talk of sikh massacre after her death, but forget very conveniently the organised murders of innocent Hindus in Punjab by the Bhindranwale gangs. Do you approve of those killings? Also tell us why the sikh leadership and the intelligentsia did not ask Bhindranwale to quit the Golden temple? Also tell us how so many sophisticated arms were allowed to be stored in the holy temple? Reply all these before abusing the memory of one of the tallest leaders this country has produced.
Minor MindBy: Jas | 04-Nov-2009 Reply | Forward Yes she was tall leader but only in the eyes of intelectual pygmies like you who are given responsible positions in army that did not/does not protect its citizens from both external and internal enemies.
Indira GandhiBy: Vikram Singh | 03-Nov-2009 Reply | Forward Major : Indira Gandhi was an arrogant fool and paid for it with her life. Yes the guards should not have knocked her out but hurting religious sentiments of sikhs and desecrating golden temple was not acceptable. Bhindarwale was indiras creation just like LTTE was Rajivs. Also I am not aware of how many hindus were lynched in Punjab before 1984 but definitely after 1984 riots it was there and why ? I think you know the reason why.The only thing tall about Indira Gandhi was her corruption and it is shameful we respect such a corrupt leader. tuly we are a nation of chamchas.
Sikhs desecrated Golden Temple First!By: Indian | 04-Nov-2009 Reply | Forward By using golden temple to launch attacks and hide from police. Why did other Sikhs let this continue? Why are you so surprised when the army came where the terrorists were? LTTE existed long before Rajiv Gandhi and that shows how ignorant you are! As far as Bhindrenwale goes, having a meeting with a defector of Akalidal doesn't amount to creation of a terrorist. Politicians routinely do that with the dissident opposition leaders.
