At least 68 people are believed to be dead in the military plane crash in East Java in Indonesia.

At least 93 people are dead following the crash of a military plane on the Indonesian island of Java.

Troops and their families were on board.

Dozens were injured and the death toll could climb, with local television flashing footage of fire engulfing the mangled wreckage. Soldiers were seen carrying badly burned bodies on stretchers to waiting ambulances.

Military spokesman Sagom Tamboen said 109 passengers and crew were on board the aging C-130 Hercules, which crashed into a row of houses near an air force base in East Java province early Wednesday.

He said at least 93 people had died.
